Chiang Khong is located on the far northern border of Thailand, directly across the the Mekong River from the Lao town of Houei Xai. A small, sleepy town with one main road and minimal night life, it has a Friday market, a lot of temples, a craft village with a busy market and a temple. The best time to visit is from October to January, or in April for the Giant Catfish Festival - when baby giant catfish are taken to the Mekong river and released.



Giant Mekong Catfish

The Giant Mekong Catfish (Pangasianodon gigas) is endemic to the Mekong River and is a critically endangered species. Chiang Khong has a museum devoted to the Giant Catfish, and a festival is held in their honour around April 18 each year (Songkran / Thai New Year).

Mekong Boat Trips

Chiang Khong is a popular tourist gateway in to Laos, especially to the World Heritage centre of Luang Prabang. Take the slow boat to Luang Prabang, two days on the mighty Mekong River.
